Why Ear Infections are More Frequent in Children

Everyone is capable of getting an ear infection every now and again but why is it that children tend to get them more often than adults? Ear infections are one of the most common reasons kids are taken to the doctor. This article explains exactly what an ear infection is, and why kids suffer from them so often.

What is an Ear Infection?

According to the National Institutes of Health, an ear infection is an inflammation of the middle ear, usually caused by bacteria, that occurs when fluid builds up behind the eardrum. This can result from your child getting a cold or even just a sore throat.

Why Are Children More at Risk?

The biggest threat to children is that their immune system isn't as built up and as effective until they are older. So once they have been exposed to germs and bacteria, their body isn't quite sure how to fight it off.

They also have smaller ears! Because their ears have not fully developed, it can be harder to drain all of the fluid, especially if the buildup from the infection is larger than usual.

Treating Your Child with an Ear Infection

Usually ear infections will go away without having to seek treatment from a doctor. Pain relievers will help with the pain, and rest will significantly help the body when trying to fight off bacteria. Warm towels on the ears are also known to help relieve some of the pressure.

If the pain does not get better within a couple of days, be sure to visit a doctor and they may prescribe you antibiotics.

Keep Your Kids Healthy!

A sick child is never a good situation. It can result in doctor visits and taking time off work to care for them.

Stress the importance of washing their hands to kill the germs and make sure they are not in contact with anyone else who may have symptoms of an infection.
