Cell Phones and Hearing Loss

Cell Phones and Hearing Loss

by Natalie Aylett

Electronic devices have taken over and become a huge part of the world today. They have become such a high demand that it is sometimes hard for people to communicate without them. They are seen being used in schools, work environments, during dates and even while driving. I mean, they are super convenient but the obsession has gone a little overboard.

Well here is a wake up call, cell phones are found to be linked to hearing loss!

The Study

According to Healthy Hearing, the Department of Otolaryngology at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India, conducted a battery of tests and the results are shocking. The study consisted of the hearing function of 125 people who had been regular cell phone users for at least one year, compared with the hearing function of 58 people who had never used cell phones.

The results of the study showed those who were long-term cell phone users had significantly more hearing loss than the non-cell phone users. This is a result from exposure to the electromagnetic waves from mobile phones.

It's Not the Phones Alone

Headphones are a huge accessory when it comes to electronic devices. People use them to listen to music in the grocery store, during exercise, while working on homework, and the list goes on and on. Headphones play a huge role in hearing loss. Whether you're blaring the music to dance to your favorite song or you're just trying to drown out the noise around you, the loud music is only making the problem worse.

The high frequency sounds damage the small hairs in your ears that are responsible for carrying sound waves to the brain. When these hairs die, they can not regenerate resulting in hearing loss.

What Can You Do?

As far as headphones go, noise canceling headphones are highly recommended! Most of the time we are turning up our music so loud just to cancel out the noise going on around us. Noise canceling headphones can do that for you so you can listen to your music at a safer volume. They can tend to be a little pricey, but worth it.

When it comes to speaking on the phone, try putting the phone on speaker or using the Bluetooth to listen through the speakers in your car. The further the distance from your ears, the better! If you do have to hold the phone up to your ears, try your best to keep the conversation short.

Hang up and Hang Out

With such a fast paced society and a strict need for communication, cell phones can be a huge help, but we need to be aware of the risks that they come with. Put down the phone for a while and communicate with the people around you, it's better for your health and your communication skills anyway.
